Sabudana is referred to as Sago in English and is also known as the Tapioca.Sago is basically an edible starch extracted from a palm tree. It is popularly used in a variety of ways such as puddings and savoury dishes. To name a few famous Indian savoury dishes made from Sago are Sabudana-Tikki and Sabudana-Khichdi. Both these Sago dishes are popular in India and its hugely consumed during the fasting month like Navratri. We have made sure that this Sabudana Khichdi Recipe is to the taste perfect Indian style.

How to Soak Sabudana for the Khichdi?

The secret to a good sabudana khichdi is well soaked sabudana. It is very important to get the sabudana and water ratio correct to score a perfect dish. A simple rule to a well soaked sabudana is ¼ inch water more than sabudana level. Another important step is to clean/rinse sabudana properly. Simply, place sabudana in a colander and wash under cold tap water until clear water appears.

Ingredients – Sabudana Khichdi Recipe

  • 1 cup sabudana (clean in runny water)
  • 1 medium potato (chopped in small pieces)
  • 1tbsp oil
  • Spring of curry leaves
  • 1 green chilli (finely chopped)
  • ½ inch ginger (to be grated)
  • 1 & ½ tbsp peanut powder (blend peanuts to a coarse texture)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp lemon juice

Step By Step Guide – Sabudana Khichdi Recipe

  • Wash Sabudana in a Colander for at least 3 to 4 times or until the water appears clear.
  • Soak it for 5 to 6 hours. Add ¼ inch water more than sabudana level.
  • Take a non stick pan and add oil to it.
  • Once oil is hot, add cumin seeds and let it crackle. Add curry leaves.
  • Now add chopped potatoes and saute it on low flame for around 4 to 5 minutes.
  • (Keep stirring in between) 🙂 
  • Once potatoes are almost done, add peanut powder, green chilli and ginger. 
  • Saute for about a minute.
  • Now add sabudana, but before adding it remove any excess water from it. 
  • Stir well and add salt. 
  • Now add sugar and lemon juice. 
  • Mix everything well and adjust taste as per your liking. 
  • Garnish it with finely chopped coriander and serve hot.
